2023 has brought some new changes to the shelter. Beginning January 1st, 2023, Claiborne Animal Shelter will no longer be accepting out-of-county animals. This was an extremely difficult decision to make on our end. As most of you know, we have always been an open -door type shelter; accepting any and all cats/dogs from mostly anywhere in the country essentially. We have always strived to help those in need. However, the decision had to be made so that we may better serve the county that continues to depend on us.
In 2022, we had to close the shelter down THREE separate times for being full, and each time we had closed, at least 40% of the animals in our kennels were out-of-county animals. We feel that this is unfair to the Claiborne County citizens who rely on us to be able to stay open for them, as almost all other shelters only accept animals from their county as well.
There will, however, be a few exceptions to this new rule: we will continue to accept cats from Lee County, VA as their shelter does not accept them. We will also accept animals from Hancock and Granger County due to the county not having a shelter to use.
STARTING JANUARY 1st, 2023, YOU MUST PROVIDE PROOF OF RESIDENCY (such as a Drivers License) IN ORDER TO SURRENDER ANY ANIMAL.
